Title: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by fitgrl on 03/04/08 at 6:31pm I know this house has been discussed on this forum before and believe it is the oldest house in Hoover. It is the red one on the right as you are coming up the mountain on Tyler. Anyone know about the re-zoning or what it is being re-zoned as? I always hoped the historical society would do something to protect that house. :-? |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by sparky on 04/03/08 at 3:48pm I am surprised that someone on here doesn't know the answer. They have added no tresspassing signs. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by bparkian on 07/18/08 at 1:00pm How can we find out about this house?? I just drove by it and saw a crew out measuring the lot. I've been in it and it is SOOO interesting!! I sure hope someone is going to revive it and they aren't measuring to see how many new houses can be built on the large lot. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by BluffPark2010 on 07/18/08 at 2:58pm We don't need to start cramming houses onto lots where single homes once stood. That's just a recipe for more traffic. We as citizens need to stand up to developers, who are only interested in their own personal greed. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by appleblossom on 07/18/08 at 3:03pm Got an Address??? Hoover only has four homes on the right to Cobble Creek Drive. All the other houses are Vestavia or County. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by kitty3 on 07/18/08 at 5:19pm I read somewhere that approval has already been given by the city of Vestavia for an up-scale housing community somewhat similar to Cobble Creek. It was supposed to be gated, but the neighbors fought that. It's a shame that house couldn't be saved! |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 07/24/08 at 9:58pm I went in and took pictures of the house the other day... I try not to think about it because it makes me sick to my stomach. I'm just hoping someone bought the structure and will move it and preserve it. Its a frickin shame that greed takes precedence over everything else these days. I went in the house they knocked down to build that other stupid street and it was amazing and could have really been fixed up. It still have furniture and all kinds of stuff in it, including huge piles of magazines dating back to the early twenties (yes, I took as many as I could with me). I was going to go back the next day and try to salvage some of the junk but the next day they razed it. Such a shame. A friend of mine lived in that Sterne House when I was in 4th grade... it makes me sad to see it go. Where the hell was the Historical Society? I NEVER heard anything about the house until I drove past and saw the sign that said zoning meeting (but it was already past the date when I saw the sign). Grrrrrrr! |

I am not sure that it is city of Hoover so I dont think the Hoover Historical Society, if that is who you are referencing, would have been able to do anything anyway... I think it is Vestavia. YOu are right, it is a shame I love the old historical homes around here, gives the area character. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by appleblossom on 07/25/08 at 8:24am General Information. The address is 2437 Tyler Road owned by Mr. Jacob Neil Rosen, which is Vestavia Hills. I found minutes to a May 8th P&Z meeting that says they are planning a community just like Cobble Creek. It will have 20 homes no more than 3000 Sq. feet. The only problem Planning and Zonning is having is the traffic backing up on Tyler with people turning into the sub-division. They have to find an approved bypass to keep this from happening. I'd love to hear the history of the house if anyone has connections with Vestavia Chamber of Commerce. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by appleblossom on 07/25/08 at 8:52am Well, I thought I would just call the Vestavia Chamber myself... Talked to a very nice lady by the name of Susan Rucks. She lived on Tyler long ago and still knows some folks that could probably give us a lot of history on the house. She said to give her a few days and she would call me next week - will keep you posted. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 07/25/08 at 12:20pm This house is listed in that old History of Bluff Park book... seems like someone could stop this from happening since its historical... hell, maybe we could get moneybags Hoover to purchase the home and move it somewhere! At least the historical part of the home... I wish I was Bill Gates... I'd go around the country buying up stuff. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by bpres08 on 07/25/08 at 2:15pm I saw a new sign there today about the development. Looks like the project is moving forward. There has also been some clearing activity going on at the site. I believe the remaining days for the house are few! I was not able to read all of the sign, may get another look later!! |

Which book are you talking about? I have done several works on the history of Bluff Park and I have not come across this house in a book as of yet, which does not mean anything.. there are several books out there. The Hoover Historical Society published "The History of Hoover and its People," it covers all of Hoover. There are 4 books in the Library you can check out and a lot of material at the Hoover Historical Society you can look at just on Bluff Park. There are also several articles on the Website. Depending on the book, it may have been included because of the owner (past owners) if they were any relation to the Hale family, not necessarily because of the location of the home.. which is not Hoover or Bluff Park. The Hales owned most of BLuff Park.. which was Hale Springs at the time. History is my thing so any info we get on this home will be interesting... Bluff Park or not |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by kitty3 on 07/25/08 at 10:32pm I believe it is in "All About Bluff Park" written by a Mr. Gilbert???? Roy Gilbert maybe? It got lost in a move of my parents. Would love to have a copy. Bluff Park Elementary sold them for $2 when I was there in the early 80's. Could probably find a copy at the Hoover Library or maybe get permission to copy at the elementary school. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by kitty3 on 07/25/08 at 10:41pm After Googling, it is "Let's Call it Bluff Park" by Roy Gilbert. If anyone has a copy, I'd love to purchase one. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 07/26/08 at 4:19pm Dr Real (the dentist down near the Pig) had one of these books in his waiting room for years, it may still be there... |

That book is in the Hoover library also, I think it may also be in the library at Bluff Park Methodists. I also got some info on the house from my mom who lives off Tyler. She tells me that the house was moved here from another state. It was very obvious because the architecture was so different. When they moved to the area she remembered that it had a yard full of tulips and the owners had a butler that would wave to people that passed by. When the owner died the house just kind of sat there. She did not remember it ever being for-sale so it may have gone into trust to someone or left to another family member.. my dad recalls going to an estate sale at the house when it was being cleaned out. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by fitgrl on 07/27/08 at 5:28pm BP writer, I'm pretty sure that house is in the Hoover History book you mentioned as well in the Bluff Park section. I found it at the Hoover Library specifically to see that house in it. I believe it is the oldest house in Hoover or the 1st house on the mtn. Some sort of distinction. It kills me to see it demolished!! I wonder why the historical society didn't do something about it earlier. :-? |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 07/27/08 at 8:20pm It's not the oldest house in Hoover but it is the oldest 2 story cabin in Hoover... my father went up to the house the other day and walked around and all the doors are numbered so maybe they are going to disassemble the house and move it... why else would they number the doors? |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by BluffParkWriter on 07/31/08 at 10:59pm I took a photo of the house today. There were 2 white pickup trucks outside it and a no trespassing sign. I had to take it out the window of the car. Soon as I get it in a format I can post I will |

Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 08/04/08 at 2:41pm I stopped in there on Sunday, and walled all around the inside of the house one last time... it makes me want to cry. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by BluffParkWriter on 08/04/08 at 2:45pm There is a no trespassing sign out by the road now, so be careful if anyone goes to look at it. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 08/04/08 at 3:21pm I've found that usually if you go up to the workers first and tell them who you are, then they don't mind... if there are no workers, just go in broad daylight and don't act like you're casing the joint! I also think that this is where being a girl comes in handy... girls tend to be less threatening (except for me, I'm very threatening >:( )! Remember how pretty this house used to look back in the old days? I remember thinking it would be the coolest house to live in at Christmastime... and it looked so pretty when it snowed. :'( :'( :'( |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 08/08/08 at 9:42pm Here's an update on this house: My father when by the house last week and there were two men on the front porch of the house so he asked if they knew who owned the property now. One man said that he was the owner and the other man was working for him bulldozing the land. Dad asked him what he was going to do with the log cabin and he said that he didn't know yet, but he was paying a company who specializes in removal of cabins to disassemble it and put it in storage until he figures out what to do. Dad told him that he was interested because of the fact that our ancestor had built it (Learn something new every day... I guess I should listen to my Dad more often because I didn't know that I had ties to that house!). The man said that he was interested in any history on the house so my dad showed him some historical stuff he had showing that the man who had built it was an Ingalls (who is in my lineage somehow). The man who was running the bulldozer turned out to be an Ingalls too, with ties to Walker/Winston County (where these Ingalls came from) and was amazed to hear that he might be tearing down a house built by one of his ancestors too. So, as sad as it is to see the home go, at least its being saved, sort of... |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by fitgrl on 08/18/08 at 8:16pm Have you seen the house this week? So sad!! I thought they were going to try to save it. Maybe they found too much damage?? :-/ |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by JBH on 08/18/08 at 9:02pm Looking at it go down while driving by, I think that they did want to save it. They were very carefully removing the first part of the roof. You are probably correct about too much damage. They now seem to be just taking it down. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by galaxiegrace on 08/18/08 at 9:13pm They've only saved the part of the house that was the log cabin. The rest they are just letting fall. So sad... I wanted to go by there and ask them if I could have the back kitchen door, but I didn't get a chance. Now its too late. Not Bluff Park related, but did anyone notice that the building that was going on at the Green Springs/Lakeshore Dr area has stopped and now there is a For Sale sign is up? There was a gorgeous house circa 1940-50 there that they 'dozed to build a street with multiple homes squeezed onto the lot... but I guess the developer's eyes were too big for his wallet because it's all stopped now. I do not feel sorry for the developer. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by Bluff Park Guy on 08/19/08 at 3:59pm That developer has to be hurting. They were trying to get Homewood to approve that development 4 years ago. The neighbors were against it because of the increased traffic flow. I'm betting whoever the developer is paid a good bit of money for the property. |

That was to be built by The Carroll & Green group. The company filed for bankruptcy and abandoned the project. |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by rlfbhm on 08/21/08 at 10:52pm I have a copy of "Let's call it Bluff Park". It was given to me by my dad when I moved back after college. There is no picture of the house on Tyler Road. I am sad to see it go, but I don't think it has any significant historical importance to Bluff Park. The first homes in Bluff Park were built along Shades Crest because of the close proximity to the springs on the bluff where they got their water. After those original houses came Octavia Spencer around 1850. He purchased 400 acres and built 40 log cabins and dancing pavillion for vacationers. It was called Spencer Springs until Gardner Hale bought the property (Hale Springs). Then the Tyler family dairy, then the hotel...... Many people don't realize how far back Bluff Park goes and the remnants of that time still remain. The stone arches you see in front and on some of the houses on shades crest were built from the left over limestore used on the Bluff Park Hotel. There is stuff like that everywhere up here. Another note of interest - across Oxmoor Road from the BP at the bottom of the hill is a cemetery. It's in the woods and hard to see. It was cleaned up at the end of last winter but it's grown back up. Some of those people were employees of L&N railroad. Those are the same people who vacationed on the crest and stayed at BP Hotel. Fun Stuff |
Title: Re: Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning Post by roxy on 08/22/08 at 10:04am More about the house on Tyler Road From the book A History of Hoover, Alabama and Its People, written in 1992 Chapter 2 pg. 9 The oldest known house on Shades Mountain is the two - story log cabin of Dorah Sterne (Mrs, Mervyn H. ) on Tyler Road. built in 1819 in Mount Pinson by Peter Ingle, the home was moved to Tyler Road in the late 1940's by Edward Beaumonts and was sold soon afterwards to the Sternes.
