Title: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by Abbey111 on 09/19/08 at 1:06pm To protect animals from being persecuted against willy nilly, there is a law that at least 3 people from different residences must lodge a formal complaint at City of Hoover Municipal Court. I am glad they have this law bc I love animals and have two dogs I wouldn't trade for the world. They are good dogs and don't bark anymore than the avg dog. As far as I know they aren't disturbing anyone. It is frustrating however when you have reached your limit as to how much barking you can stand. I work at home and I am pregnant. When I try to sleep our neighbor's dog inevitably starts barking every third time I lay down. I think it has something wrong with it. I can't play in backyard with my dogs without it barking nonstop. I also don't know what I will do when baby arrives if I can't sleep while the baby sleeps. I am at my wits end!! I am in 3rd trimester so I am already uncomfortable, emotional, and sleep deprived as it is. Our neighbors complain, but they can't lodge a complaint. They work and don't have time to drive to Pelham during their lunch. There are no options, according to the police officers we have spoken to, to get the paper work for them or have them do this by fax. How ridiculous!! You would think at this time if 2008 there would be a way. This dog has more rights than we do. I am fed up! I am thinking that the only thing left to do is to take this person to small claims court so that she might consider getting a trainer for the dog, a bark collar, or taking some other action to prevent dog from disturbing the neighbors. Does anyone have any ideas? PS - Moderator I accidentally posted this in announcements section first when I shoudl have posted here. Please remove from that section for me if you can. Thanks. |
Title: Re: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by ronsu on 09/19/08 at 4:22pm We have the same issue, only this dog barks NONSTOP into the night. Right outside our bedroom window as late as 10:30/11:00 p.m. |
Title: Re: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by bucksma on 09/21/08 at 12:34am Have you talked to your neighbor? If they aren't there they may not be aware. I have this fear that my dog barks too much but I think he would annoy us first before anyone else. There is actually a dog behind us that barks a lot and I also wonder if people think it is our dog. |
Title: Re: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by RockviewResident on 09/22/08 at 4:10pm I really sometimes wonder if pet owners don't "hear" their own dogs barking because they are so used to it. You might want to try actually asking them to try to keep their dog quiet. |
Title: Re: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by fitgrl on 10/09/08 at 10:19pm I agree. We have two very sweet dogs that I never thought had any sort of barking problem...until a few weeks ago when I had surgery and was home all day for several days trying to sleep. AGHH!! If they see anyone from our back yard they bark like crazy until they no longer see them. I don't think we have any pregnant girls on our street but if anyone else on here has been annoyed by them I am SO sorry! We are trying to keep them inside more during the day where they don't bark. Definitely talk to the owners/neighbors and see if you can come to some compromise. Good luck! :) |

I feel your pain. I had the same problem that you have and it is no fun. I have had neighbors tell me how nice it is that the dog does not bark all the time anymore, but no one heard it when I asked for help. I think people just do not want to get involved. I understand that you get to a point where you just cannot take it anymore and you are willing to try anything. I tried taking to the neighbor on several different occasions and they just did not care. I used a camera to video the dog barking and took it to Hoover. I posted here and asked for any advice. After 15 months of barking I read posts about making friends with the dog and throwing it a bone. I do not advise any of these suggestions. My neighbor had the police on speed dial and if I had thrown something over the fence, even a dog treat, I would have been arrested. I could not blow my air horn, yell or do anything to bother my neighbors, yet their dog could bark all day and night, but unless three people go to Hoover, it does not count. My neighbors do not own their home, they live in a home owned by a church and I called the church, posted here and wrote letters to the church. I even made a You Tube video to show what I was hearing all day long. I was desperate. I love pets and I did not want harm to come to the dog, but I have a right to enjoy my home and property. I do not know why they decided to control the dog, but I am thankful. They have done a great job with the dog and I rarely hear their dog bark. You can only work with the rules you are given. Be creative. If you can file a small claims case, get the dog barking on tape. I was to the point that I did not care how it stopped, I just wanted it stopped. Knock on their door when the dog barks. I did this until they called the police on me and I was told I could not step foot on their property. I wish you luck and believe me.....I feel your pain! |
Title: Re: Dog Driving Me Nuts Post by TigerLily08 on 12/19/08 at 8:17pm Well, my advice is don't do what our neighbors did. When our dog barked they would turn the hose on him. That just antagonized him and now they wonder why he barks at them everytime he sees them outside. I even caught them one afternoon shooting a squirt gun at him. Crazy. :o Anywhow, dogs bark......it is what they do. Ours sleeps inside at night and when we are home and hear him barking too much we bring him in. |
