Title: Mutilated Cat
Post by Lucysmom on 10/20/08 at 6:11pm

This morning a mutilated cat was found near the corner of Lester Lane and Meadowlark Drive.   Only the top half of the cat's body was found.  A worker from the City of  Hoover Public Works disposed of the body.   Are coyotes still being spotted in the area?  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

A neighbor on Shenandoah told me he saw one leaving his back deck early Saturday morning.  Now when my little dogs go out at night I walk out with them.    Kinda scary!!

We have corresponded with the cat's owner and she indicates that this was not a coyote attack.  According to her, it was a clean cut across the abdomen.

She is offering a $500 reward for anyone who has information leading to the arrest of the individual who committed this crime.  If you have information regarding the attack, please send an e-mail to info@bluffparkal.org and we'll forward it to the cat's owner.

We will also post this on the Community Billboard page of the Bluff Park Neighborhood Web Site:  http://www.bluffparkal.org/community_billboard.htm

That is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard.
I hope the owner has filed a report.
This is why you cant have your pets unattended, there are sick people anywhere at any time. Remember if someone can do something like that to an animal they very well are likely to hurt humans as well.

My thoughts are with the owners.

A report has been filed.  Thank you for your concern.  This is my first brush with true hate and evilness, and it is terrifying.  I loved my little buddy so dearly and will miss him, but people that do such acts don't stop there.  That is what is so terrifying- even more so that they are in our neighborhood!  Let's just all keep our eyes open and watch after each other.  Times have changed so much, and someone that is capable of slicing my cat in two is capable of so much more-especially as the person gets older.  Thank you for all of your support.  I truly mean that.  Again, just keep your eyes and ears open and if you hear any children or teen or whoever joking about such issue, please don't hesite to share with us.   I need to know so I can contact the same officer.

As for other actions, I have alreay sent an email to the pricipals of Simmons, Bluff Park, and Hoover, informing them of the situation, and I have recieved supportive responses.  They will spread the word.  I've also made a post on Craigslist and the Birmingham News.  kids think that they can do this, because it's so difficult to get caught, but if we work together, we won't let them hurt us and our loved ones anymore.  We just have to be nosey neighbors!...maybe not too nosey :) but take note of people that are not supposed to be in the neighborhood.  If someone is around, we could introduce ourselves and talk with them briefly.  If they seem uncomfortable and really don't have a good response as to what they are doing, that's a problem and cause for a possible red flag.

Again, thank you so much for all of you support.  I just want to find these people and get them off of our streets so we all are safe.  We have a beautiful neighborhood.  Let's just watch after each other.

Bluff Park is a wonderful place to call home. But crime and hatred finds its way even into the corners of our neighborhoods. We have had robberies at Shades Mountain Plaza, identity theft, car and home burglaries...even near to us, the terrible attack and murder of a lady just walking her dog at her apartment complex. It is very sad that evil has no respect for those who simply love life, their pets, their home and family, their God...and turn that inner anger and wrath against the innocents who cross their destructive paths...We have to be careful in these times as never before abecause these times are not like previous times and so many are walking on shifting sands instead of solid rock. Pets ask nothing of us but offer so much love and unselfish companionship - gifts from God to comfort us when we are sad and to share in both the good times and the bad. I hope whoever would take the life of a defenseless animal will come face to face with a life-changing experience and will seek forgiveness before it is too late...

This terrible incident needs to also be noted in the Neighborhood Watch section.

I believe this happened in an apartment complex over on Lorna Road, not close to Bluff Park.  I think it was a botched robbery, but could be wrong.  Terrible that it happened and people resort to such actions.

brassml0,
you should also contact T.E.A.R.S The The Emergency Animal Rescue Service, they work cruelty cases and may be able to give you some help or info. I have worked with Tara several times. 744-3373

which incident were you asking about? The cat or the lady that got killed on Lorna?

This happened last week or the week before in an apartment complex off Lorna Road, it was a robbery/target. Lady was walking her dog and was killed. There is an arrest, 2 males in custody.. this was no where near Bluff Park...but is is still sad. It has been on the news.

Could someone please tell us if a report was filed with the police?  I would really like to know the rest of the story concerning the cat.

I guess I am the only one confused on this issue.  I am assuming that stumpy does not think a police report was filed by the post he/she made.  I am also assuming that the owner of the cat does not want to tell us if a report was filed with the police.

I would like to know if we have a crazy person running around Bluff Park killing cats.  Isn't there a police officer that posts on this forum?  Could they tell us if this really happened?

There are two stories reguarding this issue. First that a person took the cat and killed it, and second a animal attacked the cat. I am about 95% sure a report was not filed with the police department. I like sweethome are confused about this issue, and would like a proper story to explain it.

I have made contact with one of the family members, a very up set family member. Here is an update that THEY gave me to the situation.....

"The police were informed last week. My family was out of town, and my neighbors who called the police where transferred to an animal control unit. An officer has since been in contact throughout the past week with us and has sincerely apologized about the mishandling of the case by whomever transferred the call while we were away."

I am not sure if the family member was upset because of the doubt or what happened to the cat.  My guess would be both.  At least it explains why stumpy did not think a report was filed with the mix up between the police and animal control.  I thought we would have gotten an update by now on the cat, but if there is nothing new to add, I guess there is no new info to past on.

I appreciate you contacting the family to clear up the confusion and hopefully the family will understand why some of us were confused.  It would be nice to hear what the police think about this.  Was this a random act or did the killer target this poor family?  We may never know.

My neighbor- very old- called the police and told them it looked like a coyotee attack, thus Animal Control transfered him to Public Works and they came out.  When the man from Public Works came out, he told my neigbor that that didn't look like any coyotee attack that he'd seen, because it was such a clean cut.  He said it looked like someone had cut him in two.  By that time, however, he was there to pick up the body, so that's what he did.  When my neighbor came over to tell my mother when she got home, he was very upset and told her that someone had murdered our cat.  That's all we know.  The cat is gone now, so there is nothing to investigate.  My neighbor and my family believe that he was killed by a person or people, but we and the police have no evidence.  I hope you will all just watch after each other's animals.  The police did the best they could given what they had.  Public Works should not have taken him once they saw his body.

I hope that all responsible individuals are caught, prosecuted, and stopped.  Tomorrow is Halloween night, a time for fun for children, for most people.  It can be a time of danger for pets because of a few sick people.  Please keep a special eye on your pets, especially cats, tomorrow night.
