Title: Cops at a house on Valley Street - 11/06
Post by Matt and Amanda on 11/07/08 at 12:25pm

Anyone know what the cops were doing at a house on Valley Street at about 5pm yesterday? I saw two cop cars there and looked like they were talking to owners. My guess would be owners came home to find house broken into, but that is a total guess. Anyone know real reason? I hope everyone is OK.

Well aren't we being a little rude...I think we should all be aware of what is going on in our neighborhoods.  It's not called being nosey, its called being observant.  If more people paid attention to what was going on around them, there would probably be a lot less opportunity for crime.

While listening to my scanner Thursday I did hear a call reporting a burglary on Valley. There was also a burglary on Clearview that same day.

Good time to mention Neighborhood Watch...

the entire concept of Neighborhood Watch is neighbors being "nosey" and watching out for other neighbors.  Check it out and contact Ofc. Foreman if you'd like to schedule a meeting. To organize a Neighborhood Watch for your block or a Business Watch please contact Ofc. Foreman at 444-7700 or via e-mail at foremanr@ci.hoover.al.us

Just saw this post now.

From what I understand, a garage door was left open w/ owners away, somebody kicked in the inside door and helped themselves to small electronics and took off, laptops and cameras, etc.  I think this happened early afternoon, apparently the most dangerous time for smash and grab.

I know there are some of you who are not proponents of " rocking the boat" or making negative comments regarding HPD but, with the current state of Bluff Park and the numbers of people who navigate through our neighborhoods and have no regard for traffic laws and with very poor coverage by HPD and their lack of concern for our community, I am not the least surprised that this type of activity occurs. I am aware that there are other areas of Hoover with higher inidents of crime and that HPD is commited to provide the bulk of their coverage to the Highway 31 Highway 150 area. We will not have any better coverage until we start making waves and bringing our plight out in the open. Now, do I have all of the answers to our lack of coverage? No, I do not. I do know that in the past I have made contact with HPD concerning these issues but their standard reply seems to be to have US, the residents to police our own neighborhhod.Well, I do not have the time nor the resources to do my job and come home to do their job. That is what we pay taxes for and we should expect more than we get. It has been posted here on numerous occasions how large our Beat is and how few patrol Officers we have to cover. I do not fault them as they can only do so much. I do fault the leadership of our city and their apparent lack of concern for what we see as real needs. I would challenge any of you who may be in our local law enforcement to get us some help.

I don't see why we have a sub station if they don't staff it.

Its not staffed because it would be a waste of money to pay an officer to sit there all day. Bluff Park is not a crime problem so there is no need for 24/7 staffing. Incidents of crime are very low in Bluff Park and in no way would an officer sitting in a substation prevent this or other problems. If you have questions or problems contact Officer Foreman and voice them.

This isn't specific to Bluff Park but just a heads up. I was talking to a Hoover detective and he said there have been increased incidents of home burglaries. The pattern is  the burglars go to house during the day and knock on the door. If someone answers they ask if they can rake leaves, clean gutters, cut grass (summer), etc. If no one answers then they kick the door in and take what they can. They have been hitting Mountain Brook, Vestavia and Hoover.   It is burglary ring and they are working hard to round them up.

So folks, if someone that looks out of the ordinary for your neighborhood, knocks on your door and ask to do work such as listed above, call the police and tell them about it.  Give them a good description of the person and vehicle.  Tag numbers are very important.
