This was sent today i n the Hoover Crime alert email.

Hoover Police Reports Counterfeit Scheme

Detectives with the Hoover Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit are warning residents to avoid becoming a victim of a scam known as "overpayment fraud." In this scheme, counterfeit gift checks are mailed to individuals who have listed items "for sale" on one of the popular online auction sites and then accepted payment / overpayment for those items.

If you receive as payment some form of a gift check, money order, etc. ALWAYS check with the note's issuer and validate the instrument mailed to you for payment.
