Friends of The Moonlight---

“Summer is kind of like the ultimate one-night stand: hot as hell, totally thrilling, and gone before you know it.” — Cosmopolitan

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
  -John Sebastian

Thought we might ease into summer, hey? A gradual, progressive climb towards tepid, then toasty, then torrid afternoons-- no reason to expect a sudden headlong plunge into Hell's very cauldron. What, you weren't here a year ago, my friend? Got the memory of a goldfish, do ya? Prepare to unbutton, shed the shoes, find a fan, sip the spirits, and seek the shade... we may be in it for the long haul again. Happily we, have distractions for you---

Friday the 3rd-- MARTHA'S TROUBLE, 7:30pm, $12

It's always a pleasure to bring Jen and Rob Slocumb back to our stage, as we have done many times over the years--- like an exotic species transplanted to our own region, MT has found a perfect place here in the Deep South to explore their creative musical genius, while building a family and experiencing new parenthood. After touring hard for almost a decade, and winning awards and critical notice for their string of self-released records, the Texan/Canadian duo settled down for a rest in, of all places, Auburn AL... and begat a son.

Such grounding turned out to be the path to their greatest strengths, as they've examined the potential of adding band members, working with different producers, and booking more playdates in Dixie. After five years, they've come full circle once more to the signature folk/pop sound that characterizes their most enduring projects, and continues to charm new listeners with their tenth and latest release, "Anchor Tattoo". It's a proud declaration of the couple's faith and commitment to their Muse, a modern-day collection of parables and pitch-perfect poetry, to which we can all relate.

Saturday the 4th--- GIRLYMAN, with opener Lucy Roche, 7:30pm, $15
This striking quartet is as unique as any artist we've featured here, and waaaay outside the norm for our offerings--- yet perfectly suited to an audience who's out for fun, frolic, and high-end harmonies. The sheer novelty of Girlyman's approach to entertainment has earned them increasing success at larger venues and festivals across the country--- their appearance in Birmingham many months ago created a buzz that has hardly abated, and we expect a healthy crowd of all ages to be on hand for their Moonlight show.

Working for a long time as a trio, Doris, Ty, and Nate have added their friend JJ on drums, to bring an extra measure of snap to their quirky folk/jazz song list, and to further warp our expectations of what cheerful young men and women might sing about. The group's playfulness is its hallmark, touched here and there by more sobering references to issues of greater gravity-- an appealing blend of sophisticated satire and silliness that carries true meaning.

An extra diamond in the bag is our opener tonight, Lucy Wainwright Roche--- further evidence that when gifted artists combine their DNA in precocious offspring, we are the happy recipients of bonus blessings. Raised in Greenwich Village among the leading lights of late 1990's urban folk, Lucy couldn't avoid the influences of family members and the highly-successful artists who encouraged her, including the Indigo Girls, Dar Williams, Amos Lee, and Neko Case--- many of whom she has toured with since going full-time with her music career in 2007.

We've made it known that we don't operate The Moonlight for money--- there are higher objectives for which we aim, most prominently the continued opportunity for deserving songwriters and singers to deliver their goods, to those who appreciate the gifts. And because it takes more money to keep this enterprise alive than we can gather from its cashbox, the concept of gifting extends to those of you who want to see us continue. We ask that you consider helping us in our mission by making a tax-deductible contribution of any size, at the non-profit website below-->
