Title: Fabulous Fun Family Fashion Show
Post by Bluff Park Forum Admin on 09/04/12 at 11:18am

The Seasoned Performers, Alabama’s only senior adult theatre company is celebrating everybody’s favorite people -- grandparents! On National Grandparents Day, Sunday September 9, Grandparents, Parents, Children, and Grandchildren will walk a Fabulous Fun Family Fashion Show, featuring stylish clothing by Belk. The event will be from 2:00 to 4:00 on Sunday, September 9 at the lovely Aveda Institute in Hoover (3200 Galleria Circle 35244). The program will be emceed by Rosemary Lucas (former “Weather Girl” at Channel 13), and other special guests will be present. Niva Dorough, Ms. Senior Alabama 2012, will sing.

The Fashion Show will feature local celebrities, Seasoned Performers, and their families. Cathy Gilmore and her grandchildren will represent the Virginia Samford Theatre, and we will also have Ginger Sharbel of Birmingham Festival Theatre reading a brief portion of Love, Loss, and What I Wore. Fashions will represent A Night at the Theatre, Bedtime Stories, and Dress for Holidays – all favorite activities to share with grandparents. Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 which includes fashion show, entertainment, refreshments, and door prizes.

Sponsors include Belk, Aveda Institute, Seniors Helping Seniors, HealthSouth, TheSuperDeal Birmingham, Carole Smitherman for Judge (Circuit Court Place 13), and David Faulkner for Judge (Circuit Court Place 6). The fashion show is directed by Stacey Keenan, with fashion coordination by Susan Tice of Belk, and hair and makeup by Aveda Institute students.

National Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter to be celebrated annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Originated by a West Virginia grandmother Marian McQuade to bring attention to the plight of lonely elderly residents of nursing homes and shut-ins, this day has become one of national recognition. Today the holiday has three goals: To honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.

The Seasoned Performers know the real truth about grandparents: they are the most fun people around! In recognition of the original purpose of the day, audience members will have an opportunity to create cards for area shut-ins and nursing home residents. Area agencies supporting seniors will be in attendance with information about outreach and volunteer opportunities. There may even be some grandparents available for adoption!

For more information about this event, or how you can get involved contact The Seasoned Performers at 205-978-5095 or mail@seasonedperformers.org.
