Lost or Found pets are always a concern in a community. The Bluffparkal.org forum has aided many in finding their lost pet or reuniting a found pet with its owner.

Me being one of them, I just wanted to share a list of contacts and steps to help you in the process. This is just some stuff I have found helpful.

What do I do if I have lost my dog/cat:

To start, the fastest way to get your pet home if he/she becomes lost is to have them micro-chipped and make sure their tags are properly on them. Make sure their tags for rabies shots and contact info are up to date. There are several miro-chipping company's and most vet offices will also micro chip. Does not hurt the pet, takes just a few mins.

If your dog slips a chain, digs out or is an "escape artists" use an invisible fence (note this does not work if the power goes out) or an electric fence.

(most of this is common knowledge)

first call animal control to see if your pet has been picked up, call your vets office and surrounding vets offices in your area (list below) fax them a photo of your pet and contact info.

Search your area, if looking at night most dogs tend to wander toward lights or brightly lit homes/shopping center etc. Look under bushes or trees if it is really hot.
If you take your dog on walks check the path that you take to walk.

leave flood lights, porch lights, carport lights etc on at night.

Making signs:
provide a photo
contact info which can include phone numbers, email addresses. You may also want to add this site/forum to your flier. It is a good idea to put your sign in a plastic protector to keep it from getting wet.

What do I do if I find a pet?

First check for collar/ tags/ micro-chip.
Most micro-chips are put just to the side a the shoulder blade (they can move around sometimes) it will feel like a small grain of rice.

ANY VETS OFFICE/HUMANE SOCIETY/ANIMAL CONTROL CAN CHECK WITH A SCANNER FOR THE CHIP. THE SCANNER WILL GIVE THE OWNERS INFO!!!!!!!!!!!

if there is no chip or collar then you need to go to advertising the found pet.

Do NOT provide a pic, if someone calls you saying they lost "said pet" that person needs to be able to describe the found pet to you for proper identification of the real owner.

Make signs to place around the area you found the pet. Include the same info as if you lost the pet. Fax the sign to all area vets and humane society's.
