Friends of the Moonlight---

Seven inches of rain on the hilltop here, and a temperature drop of thirty-three degrees in just a coupl'a days--- we try hard not to babble on about the weather here, after all, what can we do besides make it worse? Once again, a big whirly-wind storm flexed our windows and unplugged our circuits, trying hard to scuttle the music.... but with the help of some Alabama Power wire-warriors, we got back the juice just in time to open the doors for six Open Mic contestants, and made a great night of it. Ugly weather comes and goes, but the constancy of choral chromatica can be counted on to conquer it--

A quick note to those of you who know the value of top-hand advice in your own efforts at songwriting--- our Saturday headliner, Pat Terry, is hosting a workshop on the day of his show, and for a surprisingly low price, participants can partake of his personal consultation AND have good seats for his performance that evening at The Moonlight. Your connection to this deal is by email to:  bhamnsai@yahoo.com

Far as we know, tickets to the show with LEON REDBONE on September 30 are still available--- just like sunny days, rainy nights, and high-school crushes, they won't last forever, so we suggest you make your reservations now, before it's toooooo late... drop an email to:  todd@hopemanifest.org

And while we're housekeeping a bit here, tending to a few small mentions, let us unpack our first little holiday baubles--- in no time at all, seasonal celebrations will be speckling the calendar--- tinsel, punchbowls and party hats marking the end of another, um.... remarkable year. Your house--- if you still have one--- may be a bit small to gather the entire family, or the company, bent on toasting the December festivities, so please consider that Moonlight would be an excellent place to get 'em all together. We have open dates, weekend and weeknights, for such revelry... a simple reply to this email will put you in touch with us for reserving one of them.

THREE FINE, FINE SHOWS THIS WEEK-- COME TO ALL OF 'EM!--->

Thursday the 8th--- JAMES HARWELL and Friends, a Moonlight Benefit! 7:30pm, $10 donation
He's our friend and neighbor, as well as an experienced song-slinger--- James has stood on many a bandstand in these parts, since his first earnest efforts in New Wave keyboarding with his band The Undertow. Several pairs of parachute pants later, he progressed into less-affected styles of performance, moving into competence on rhythm guitar with groups like The Sleepys, who enjoyed regional success in the college and club scene of the time. As the years rolled by, Harwell transformed further through gigs at City Stages and other festivals, as a member of The Blondells and with his buds in The Crunchys. He continues to play solo spots locally, and buys a coveted new guitar every now and then to keep himself jazzed up about it.

What's special is that James is doing his show here as a benefit for The Moonlight, with whatever money gathered for admission being dedicated to keeping our bills paid and our doors open. That means that you can show your support for James and his years of keeping you entertained, AND for his wish that Moonlight keep hard at the task as well. He'll be accompanied by two players he's drafted into the project, Johnny Ippolito on lead guitar, and Don Bennett with his own brand of bass-- bring plenty of refreshments to share with your friends, we hope to have a house full!

Friday the 9th--- HANNAH ALDRIDGE, 7:30pm, $12
Sir Isaac Newton made a name for himself proving the old adage about apples falling close to the tree--- an aphorism that comes to mind when we consider Hannah's dad being one of Nashville's most respected longtime writer/player/producers. All the more relevant that they claim Muscle Shoals as their family homeground... Walt's guidance and influence is surely a part of the stunning work that she's recorded, an ambitious, layered, and almost orchestral disc that showcases her emotive vocals and lyrics.

As a child of the New Times, though, she's made sure it speaks clearly from a contemporary viewpoint, and breaks new ground as a statement of her own. Hannah draws her melodies and words from her life as a young mom, a child of The Spirit, and a creative soul with everything good ahead of her. How she manages to mold all that into songs so arresting is a mystery to her even yet.... she just follows the Muse, and makes the most of her blessings.

Saturday the 10th-- PAT TERRY, with Wilder Adkins opening, 7:30pm, $12
A lifetime in service to both country and gospel songwriting has been more than rewarding to Pat Terry, who first picked one, then the other, then decided they went hand-in-hand anyway, so he's become a master of the blend. His eponymous band was well-known nationwide during the 1970's, while placing his clearly Christian ballads in the hands of major artists, from BJ Thomas to Ray Price to Roy Rogers. After 1980 he re-routed faith music into more rock-oriented territory as a solo artist, before settling into his destiny as a composer of great numbers of hits for Nashville highest-profile performers. Not quite yet in his dotage, he continues to spot the charts with his well-placed creations, and to aid in the development of the next generation of country/gospel greats.

NEXT WEEK--- TWO KEVINS, KEEPIN' IT COOKIN'---

Thursday 15th-- KEVIN GORDON, and LAUREN ST. JANE & THE DEAD WESTERNS, bluesy NashRoots, and a redhead with a chuggin' band

Friday 16th-- KEVIN WELCH, much-honored Texas-Okie hipster-folkie re-returns for room-filling, lady-thrilling crowd-killing, God willing----

We make daily changes to The Moonlight's Calendar page, so it'll pay ya to give it a rundown scroll every once in a while, that way nothing will sneak up on you--

------------------------

And just so you won't wonder why it's missing this week, we again tag our appeal for your kind bequests right here at the end of things, along with our many thanks for your unselfish benevolence.... we're here for the musicians, and we're here for you, something we absolutely could not without contributions from you both. As a triad, we ALL keep original acoustic music a healthy part of our lives, and ain't nobody yet said that wasn't a good thing to do---
