Across the city, we are seeing a slight increase in residential car break-ins. From the reports that I have seen, a VERY small amount of the vehicles were broken into by force (approximately 2 %). These crimes are crimes of OPPORTUNITY! They are not breaking the windows or "jimmying" the door. They are simply walking around and lifting up on car door handles. If it is locked, they will move on to the next one. Victims continue to leave valuables (purses, laptops, iphones, ipads) in PLAIN SIGHT! Not only that, they are leaving the doors UNLOCKED (98% reported). Here are some tips: 1. Take your valuables with you 2. Hide them in the trunk or under the seat 3. Make sure that the vehicle is locked. Many times after press the "lock" button on the key fob, the car horn will honk, telling you it is secure. However, many models will honk or beep even when the door is left wide open. My advice is to test by leaving your door wide open, press the lock button and see what happens. If it still honks, now you know. You can check the owner's manual to try and change this setting. 4. Write down all makes/models/serial numbers for electronics, guns, any expensive item. If you don't have the serial number written down in a safe place, then it is virtually impossible to track down and prove that someone is in possession of a stolen item. Remember, we have to make it more difficult for criminals!!!
