Open Letter to the Board of Education: Friday the Hoover Board of Education had a Called Board Meeting at 3pm. The agenda calls for a Call to Order, then an Executive Session. An Executive Session is closed to the public. This meeting will be to discuss the Interim Superintendent position. The last interim superintendent chosen was in 2006, then Assistant Superintendent Andy Craig. We've written an open letter to the Board of Education Members. If you agree with our recommendation, please e-mail them. We'll post their e-mails in the first comment section. Here is the letter: Open Letter To: President Frazier, Vice-President Murphy, Mr. Presley, Mr. Cooper, Mr. Kelley: Having received the announcement of the Called Board Meeting for 11/14/14, and seeing that the Agenda calls for you to go into Executive Session, one is to surmise that you will be discussing the position of Interim Superintendent of the Hoover City Schools. The last time that HCS was in this position was in 2006, when then Assistant Superintendent Andy Craig was elevated to Interim, and subsequently was given the permanent position. As you debate who to assign the interim position, I'd like to point out how we the public will be seeing this, especially those of us who have been involved with the Board of Education on a regular basis. We will first assume, correctly I hope, that you will be looking for the interim to be a current employee of the Hoover City Schools. Next, we will be looking for the two items that Mr. Craig was lacking in his resume, which were classroom experience and a doctorate in education. Those two items were what the public lamented the most about Mr. Craig. We will also be looking for someone who can bring together all of the teachers, administrators, and staff of the Hoover City Schools at this important time. We will be looking for someone who has broad experience in the Hoover City School system, one who has filled many roles and has adapted quickly. A person who has familiarity with finances, administration, teaching, and dealing with the stakeholders one-on-one, both on the side zoned for Spain Park and the side zoned for Hoover High School. Given the history of the last seven years, we will be looking for someone who can speak to, and deal with, the Hoover City Council and the Mayor's Office. Someone they will feel comfortable with and feel is familiar with the finances of the Hoover City School system. Finally, we will be looking for someone that has demonstrated that they genuinely care about the one thing that this school system is all about: the students. As we look at all of the above, there is only one candidate that meets, and exceeds, all of the expectations that we the public are looking for: Dr. Ken Jarnagin Dr. Jarnagin is here, he's more than qualified, and ready to assume the reigns of the position. The transitional leadership he provided to Hoover High School after the Pointer Report was released restored community confidence in Hoover City Schools. I hope you will give him strong consideration. We, the stakeholders, are counting on you.
