We are looking into the same thing. Hoping to get it done this year (maybe not now). My neighbor had his replaced last year and used Bluff Park Sash and Window (Jim Holland) his card says they do window sash repair, glass repair, storm doors, wood windows, vinyl windows etc number is 205-979-2731 or 542-6094.

I don't know yet but I would expect to see a VERY small difference.  Over the years whoever owned our house before us painted all of the windows closed... I would be nice to open them up every now and then.

Replacing windows on most of the houses in BP can save people between 25-40% on energy costs.  We are getting new ones put in soon and probably using Window world.  They are by far more reasonable than anyone else we called.  Most places said 9-10K...they say 4K... A little less as far as what you get, but still double hung argon filled...just not the fancy install and all that jazz with bigger names...

One of the things that I noticed - and my son brought it up - they installed no name windows - is that when the light hits them in a certain way they are positively wavey.....and I think that is a due to the thickness of the glass itself....the window glass in his windows in much thinner than the big honkin Pella bow window I had to have put in.  It was expensive as heck, but it cut my electric bill by 1/4.
My brother is a home builder and his suggestion was the inexpensive line that Andersen does - they are all vinyl and very nice and I found them very competitive - but they could not figure out how to do the bow - even the Marvin folks could not do it.
Pella was great and they have an all vinyl window also.

Hello neighbors.
A quick response to the question hat hand.
Fisrt thing to know about single paned windows is that they ciondensate sometimes a lot during winter. This led to minor water damage in my current home that I had to repair on the window sill below. I removed every window on the front of the house & replaced with double panned units that I purchase from Mazers downtown for a 1/3 of the retail cost. I installed them myself. Now, if the job is not done perfectly & any water gets behind the windows top seal, damage is inevedable.... I have a window out right for that reason as I have to replace some siding & while I am in there I will replace the old 1956 mud seal (first board on top of the older block foundation) & add a termite barrier (another horror story for another day) & then put the window back in.
The install was not bad, I failed to get the gutters back up in a timely manner & now doing the job again, but it does allow me to get that new seal in & built another barrier against the termites..
The double pane windows do a great job lowering the heating bill as I have changed out most of my old windlws & we have seen & felt the difference up here on the mountain. I use cedar shingles on my house so replacing windows installed as I did them is a tough job, but most people with a little instruction, can replace windows themselves. I did recently install one with the dome top & it was a good bit of construction to frame it in properly.
The only draw back to double paned windows is that cheaper ones can have a build up over time that looks much like calicum on the inside where it cant be reached & the window usually just gets replaced.
I am happy to answer any questions anyone may have as I built & worked on many houses in Bluff Park.  My father (W E Russell) & I built the house at 504 Shades Crest road to give you an idea & thats where I learned to do ceder shingles & cedar shake roofs - That roof on it today is the roof I installed around 1973.  I live on Park Ave today & you can see my handiwork as I am the guy with the big deck with copper caps (I'm stil not done yet)...
Take care to all & have a safe weekend.
Kevin.

We used window world a couple years ago and they are great. I could tell an immediate difference in the draftiness of the house and also a big difference in the noise level from outside.  Could not have been happier with window world- they have a lifetime breakage guarantee, if a baseball goes thru it, they will replace it. It took about a day and half, but we replaced all 28 of the windows in our house. They were by far the best price too. Good luck.

Our strongest recommendation would be to NOT use JF Day and Company.

We had thousands of dollars of work done a few years ago only to find out they out-source the installation.  It was not done properly and after many, many calls to their service department the windows still do not open and close properly.

I have to say that I did not have that experience with JF Day - they were very professional and they had their own installers. I could not have asked for better service.
