You may see the firemen from Station 5 in
Bluff Park around your neighborhood giving
the fire hydrants a fresh paint job.
Although you may want to have your favorite
team colors on your hydrant (I asked for
Miami Dolphins colors, but was politely shot
down...), the color of the top of the
hydrant actually means something. The
color tells the firefighters how much water
pressure is put out by the particular
hydrant. This lets them know if it is
sufficient for what they are encountering.
The firefighters are going throughout Bluff
Park and testing the hydrants and then
painting them according to how the test
performed. Here we see (L-R)
Firefighter J.B. Smith, Lt. J.T. Purser and
Firefighter J.R. McDonald giving a hydrant a
fresh paint job. They did ask that you
do not landscape around the hydrants, as it
makes them hard to find. |
