Internet Safety Presentation 10/09/07
10/08/07 at 7:49pm

An eye-opening internet safety forum in Hoover plans to address many new concerns and expose new tactics being used by predators and children alike with regard to cyberspace.
The forum includes cyber experts, police and lawmakers.
“It’s really what I call ‘Cyber-Crime 101,” said Barry Matson.  Matson - Chief Prosecutor for the Alabama Computer Forensic Laboratory - will help lead the interactive-internet safety discussion which revolves around the potential dangers of chat rooms, social networking sites and other cyber concerns.
“It’s where we are vulnerable to cyber crime.  It’s totally based on child safety and not meant to scare parents,” Matson said.
Alabama Legislator Paul DeMarco, (R) Birmingham, will also join the conversation.  As a local lawmaker, DeMarco will touch on what could transpire in the upcoming 2008 legislative session to help protect kids online.  In a move specific to Hoover City School students, the system’s security officials will unveil details of new technology slated for testing in three Hoover schools.
“I have a sincere and earnest concern for our adolescents regarding their safety on the internet,” Dr. Joy Brown, Bumpus Middle School Principal, said.  Brown added that this safety presentation transcends school and district lines and should be of interest to all parents.
The free program is open to everyone.  However, seating is limited. The forum begins at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 9th at Bumpus Middle School, 1730 Lake Cyrus Club Drive, Hoover.
