Tyler Rd House Re-Zoning
03/04/08 at 6:31pm

I know this house has been discussed on this forum before and believe it is the oldest house in Hoover.  It is the red one on the right as you are coming up the mountain on Tyler.  Anyone know about the re-zoning or what it is being re-zoned as?  I always hoped the historical society would do something to protect that house. Huh

I am surprised that someone on here doesn't know the answer. They have added no tresspassing signs.

How can we find out about this house??  I just drove by it and saw a crew out measuring the lot.  I've been in it and it is SOOO interesting!!  I sure hope someone is going to revive it and they aren't measuring to see how many new houses can be built on the large lot.

We don't need to start cramming houses onto lots where single homes once stood.  That's just a recipe for more traffic.  We as citizens need to stand up to developers, who are only interested in their own personal greed.

Got an Address???     Hoover only has four homes on the right to Cobble Creek Drive.  All the other houses are Vestavia or County.

I read somewhere that approval has already been given by the city of Vestavia for an up-scale housing community somewhat similar to Cobble Creek.  It was supposed to be gated, but the neighbors fought that.  It's a shame that house couldn't be saved!

I went in and took pictures of the house the other day... I try not to think about it because it makes me sick to my stomach.  I'm just hoping someone bought the structure and will move it and preserve it.  Its a frickin shame that greed takes precedence over everything else these days.  I went in the house they knocked down to build that other stupid street and it was amazing and could have really been fixed up.  It still have furniture and all kinds of stuff in it, including huge piles of magazines dating back to the early twenties (yes, I took as many as I could with me).  I was going to go back the next day and try to salvage some of the junk but the next day they razed it.  Such a shame.

A friend of mine lived in that Sterne House when I was in 4th grade... it makes me sad to see it go.  Where the hell was the Historical Society?  I NEVER heard anything about the house until I drove past and saw the sign that said zoning meeting (but it was already past the date when I saw the sign).

I am not sure that it is city of Hoover so I dont think the Hoover Historical Society, if that is who you are referencing, would have been able to do anything anyway... I think it is Vestavia.

YOu are right, it is a shame I love the old historical homes around here, gives the area character.

 General Information.
The address is 2437 Tyler Road owned by Mr. Jacob Neil Rosen, which is Vestavia Hills.

I found minutes to a May 8th P&Z meeting that says they are planning a community just like Cobble Creek.  It will have 20 homes no more than 3000 Sq. feet.   The only problem Planning and Zonning is having is the traffic backing up on Tyler with people turning into the sub-division.   They have to find an approved bypass to keep this from happening.

I'd love to hear the history of the house if anyone has connections with Vestavia Chamber of Commerce.

Well, I thought I would just call the Vestavia Chamber myself... Talked to a very nice lady by the name of Susan Rucks.  She lived on Tyler long ago and still knows some folks that could probably give us a lot of history on the house.
She said to give her a few days and she would call me next week - will keep you posted.

This house is listed in that old History of Bluff Park book... seems like someone could stop this from happening since its historical... hell, maybe we could get moneybags Hoover to purchase the home and move it somewhere!  At least the historical part of the home...

I wish I was Bill Gates... I'd go around the country buying up stuff.

I saw a new sign there today about the development.  Looks like the project is moving forward.  There has also been some clearing activity going on at the site.  I believe the remaining days for the house are few!  I was not able to read all of the sign, may get another look later!!

Which book are you talking about? I have done several works on the history of Bluff Park and I have not come across this house in a book as of yet, which does not mean anything.. there are several books out there. The Hoover Historical Society published "The History of Hoover and its People," it covers all of Hoover. There are 4 books in the Library you can check out and a lot of material at the Hoover Historical Society you can look at just on Bluff Park. There are also several articles on the Website.

Depending on the book, it may have been included because of the owner (past owners) if they were any relation to the Hale family, not necessarily because of the location of the home.. which is not Hoover or Bluff Park. The Hales owned most of BLuff Park.. which was Hale Springs at the time.

History is my thing so any info we get on this home will be interesting... Bluff Park or not

I believe it is in "All About Bluff Park" written by a Mr. Gilbert???? Roy Gilbert maybe?  It got lost in a move of my parents.  Would love to have a copy.  Bluff Park Elementary sold them for $2 when I was there in the early 80's.  Could probably find a copy at the Hoover Library or maybe get permission to copy at the elementary school.

After Googling, it is "Let's Call it Bluff Park" by Roy Gilbert.  If anyone has a copy, I'd love to purchase one.
