"Common Social Networking Scam"

Monthly message from the Jefferson Co Sheriff's office

From the Office of Sheriff Mike Hale
Subject:      Common Social Networking Scam

One of the most common scams out occurs when members install applications to their profile page.  When you install what you think is a safe application you are actually downloading a malware file. This opens the door for more spyware and viruses to attack your computer. Malware can be unknowingly download or posted to members profile page and mail itself to everyone on each victim’s “friends” list while spreading the virus to many users.
Most people don’t expect to be scammed by other users they trust and that makes them easy prey. Be smart and guard your personal information. Below are a few tips to keep out of the malware trap.

·        Keeping your Internet security software up to date creates the first line of defense against these attacks.
·        You should be cautious when downloading and using applications from unknown providers.
·        Lastly, just like with email, don’t believe that a message you got from a supposed friend or contact necessarily did come from that person.
