Jefferson Watch: Debit Card Reactivation Scam

Debit Card Reactivation Scam

Subject:      Debit Card Reactivation Scam
Message:

Fraudulent callers are sending text messages to cell phones informing consumers that their debit card has been compromised and blocked. The recorded message then proceeds to ask the customer to “press 1″ to reactivate their card, at which point the card holder’s debit card number, PIN, expiration date, and 3-digit number are requested.
There is another fraudulent phone message currently going from coast to coast that provides customers with a phone number to call to reactivate their card. The recorded messages states that there is a technical failure in your debit card due to billing errors and we introduced a temporary blockage. In order to reactivate your debit card, please call 800-XXX-XXXX or press 1 to be transferred to our security department.
Do not respond to any emails or messages to call toll free numbers to reactivate your Debit or credit card. Verify the request through your local bank.
Unfortunately credit unions and banks across the country are being hit with similar phone scams.  We advise anyone who has questions about whether or not they have been contacted by a scam, to contact their financial institution directly.
Remember these tips on protecting your personal information:

    * Never provide your personal information in response to an unsolicited request.
    * If you believe the contact may not be legitimate, contact your bank for clarification.
    * Review account statements regularly to ensure all charges are correct.
