Jefferson Watch for May from Sheriff Mike Hale

Treasury Department assist Seniors

With the recent tornadoes and floods comes the issue of delayed mail delivery for those depending on their Social Security and Disability checks. For the benefit of those that still receive their checks in paper form; the U.S. Treasury Department has developed a couple of terrific options.
Go Direct is a program established by the U.S. Treasury Department that allows electronic deposit of federal benefits. Not only is this a safer and easier process for the benefit recipient, electronic payments are also better for the environment and provide a cost savings to taxpayers while providing a secure way to manage the funds.

    * How it works: The money goes straight into your account each month, so you never have to worry about delivery delays, loss or check theft.

    * With electronic payments, your money is available on payment day and accessible form virtually anywhere, so you can count on it being there no matter what nature brings.

    *  Another safe, reliable alternative to paper checks is a prepaid debit card issued by the U.S. Treasure Department. Cardholders can make purchases, get cash and pay bills using the card. You do not need a bank account to sign up for the card and there are no sign up fees, monthly fees or overdraft charges.

    * How do I acquire more information? Making the switch from paper checks  is easy. People can sign up for electronic deposit by calling the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s GO DIRECT helpline at (800) 333-1795 or visiting www.GoDirect.org
