10/04/11 Moonlight on the Mountain
10/04/11 at 10:31pm

Friends of The Moonlight---

The bluest skies of the year--- warm and cool at the same time--- birds on the move, breeze in the trees--- we're going to ignore the blight of the morning's broadcast news, and pretend for at least one hour, each day from now on, that everything's all right. Shouldn't be that hard to do--
just an hour. Make sure it's one when you're awake--- and it'll probably be even easier if it's one of a couple spent up here in our little refuge... here's your four next best chances to do just that---->

Wednesday the 5th--- DELTA RAE, Wendell Kimbrough opens, 7:30pm, $12
Now, THIS one you need to know about--- there's gotta be a special reason we'd try to stage a show on a Wednesday night, and this time it's because we REALLY want you to hear these folks play. Two Carolina brothers and their sister, with a fourth voice added when they all moved to California-- a quick view of one of their many videos will show you the commanding four-part harmony they so easily knock out. Mostly originals, with a clever selection of imaginative covers--- young, talented, good-lookin', and on fire with enthusiasm--- they're traveling with their rhythm section, & have major labels chasing them right now, best to see them before the coming breakthrough!

We'll also have a short opener with a songwriter out of Washington DC, Wendell Kimbrough---

Thursday the 6th-- SEAN BRUCE, and THE BARREN RIVER TRIO, 7:30pm, $12
Sean is on a solo journey across this quadrant of the country, loaded with material wrought from the most literate of influences-- Twain, Thoreau, Whitman, sculpted into melodic form by way of Springsteen, Dylan, and--- Isakov? All that's stewed up in a Louisiana style he can't possibly exclude, it's the curse and the blessing of those who were born near the mouth of the Mississippi. He plays around the home state in the company of a full band, but he's under the power of his own wings this time--- and based on what we've heard of him so far, that'll be more than enough.

Coming from the other direction, we have three gifted players from Bowling Green KY, young men caught up in the alchemy of Appalachian stringed instruments, as married with contemporary roots songwriting and matchless tri-vocal harmonies. Guitars, mando, dobro, harmonica, and a few more exotic little items tossed in for flavor--- again, if you like The Eagles, or Creedence, it's the voices that will get ya, be ready for a pretty strong blend--

Friday the 7th-- THE JASON BAILEY BAND, 7:30pm, $12
They say you can't step into the same ocean twice-- and each time we host Jason Bailey, he's forged yet another combination of supremely-skilled sidemen, an ever-changing phalanx of proficient pickers, guaranteed to serve up two sets of stunning solo and synergistic capriccioso--- joining him tonight are jazz guitarist Carlos Pino, Act of Congress' bassist Tim Carroll, and renowned Nashville fiddler Shad Cobb, from the John Cowan Band. These three, interfused with Jason's absolute mastery of newgrass mandolin, can't help but break new ground in their renditions of traditional and contemporary tunes, including originals from Jason's own three CDs.

Sunday the 9th-- ROCKIN' ACOUSTIC CIRCUS, 7:30pm, $12
Again, with the outrageously-talented young ones--- four of 'em are barely college-age, but loaded with a lifetime of abilities on their respective instruments. Though they have a tremendous respect--- and a remarkable feel for--- traditional bluegrass, folk, and country, they push those styles into brash new forms, with the irresistible determination so common to fresh new troops. They're also armed with championship proficiency on mandolin, fiddle, bass, and the innovative use of a cello--- all in support of a chorus of well-tuned vocals. As prime showcase artists at this years IBMA Conference, they've drawn comparisons to Nickel Creek and Old Crow Medicine Show.

BLASTING OUR WAY THROUGH OCTOBER, WITH EVEN MORE NEXT WEEK--->

Thursday 13th-- RAY BONNEVILLE, Texas roots/blues from a man who gets asked to play with the best-- "Like gunpowder and opium", says Ray Wylie Hubbard

Friday 14th-- JAKE LEG STOMPERS, and RUSSELL GULLEY, pre-war roots on vintage strings, and an Alabama Swampers legend

Sunday 16th-- RYAN BALTHROP, Gulf Coast songwriter and tale-teller rides north to entertain a few friends, you're invited too!

Monday 17th-- OPEN MIC, with P.J. Pacifico as guest judge-- YOU play, and catch a bit of P.J., a Connecticut troubadour out on the southern roads
