Bluff Rd + Speeders = Danger
08/12/14 at 8:58am

Hi All,
As a parent, I'm grateful to BP Elementary for closing off the road behind the school in the morning. This has provided a safe area for those walking to school. I hear it used to be dangerous with cars going fast, and even the wrong way on a one-way street!

However, I would like to bring it to everyone's attention, that the cars that used to zip through that street are now zipping at high speeds down Bluff Road which is very curvy with several blind spots. If you are a parent with a youngster who rides a bike or is old enough to walk to school by him/herself, I'd be very very wary of letting them do so. Just this morning a lady with a child in the back seat must have been going 40-45 mph down Bluff Rd while also on the phone. Walking our children up the street, we adults literally held our hands out to remind them to slow down.

How do I go about beginning the process for asking for a speed bump or two on our street? I really hate speed bumps, but we need em now....or a sign reminding the drivers to slow down....or Hoover PD with a radar gun for a few mornings.

Thanks.

We had the same issue on our road and also asked for a speed bump.

The short answer is:  it's not going to happen, no matter what.

Reason:  it can damage the fire trucks (that's the short answer - the long answer is too boring).

Bottom line:  watch your child and hope some idiot doesn't hurt her or others while driving like a moron.  Sadly there's nothing else that can be done.

This post that Officer Foreman put up four years ago today is interesting, though:

Just change the to address to Office Hale, who has taken Officer Foreman's position (haleb@ci.hoover.al.us)

Thanks for the tip. I'll have my notebook and camera ready. I do think that someone must have done something bc I don't notice as many vehicles speeding down the road as I did before.
